Network coverage in regional areas around Australia

This support article will give you key information about connecting to Vodafone’s regional network.

How to connect to the regional network.

If you have a 3G or 4G compatible device and SIM card, you’ll automatically connect to our regional network.

To check where regional coverage is available, head to our coverage checker. Areas covered by our regional network will display ‘Regional’ at the end of the description.

How do I know I'm connected to the regional network?

When you’re connected to our regional network, ‘Vodafone AU R’ or ‘Voda R’ will be displayed in the status bar on the home screen of your device.

Does it cost extra to access the regional network?

No. Using your device in regional areas is the same as using your device in any other part of our Australian network.

Can I access mobile data on the regional network?

Yes. The majority of devices will connect automatically, although if you’re using an Android or Windows Smartphone, you may need to activate data roaming to access mobile data. For more information, check out our device guides.

Can I use 4G in regional areas?

No. Our regional network currently only covers 3G. Use the coverage checker to see where our 4G network is available.

What happens when I move between regional and standard coverage areas?

If you’re on a call and you move from standard coverage to regional coverage, you’ll stay connected to the standard network until the signal degrades. If the call drops out, your phone will search for regional coverage and connect if it’s available.

If you’re on a call and you move from regional coverage to standard coverage, you’ll stay connected to the regional network for the duration of the call. Once the call ends, you’ll switch onto the standard network.

If you’re using mobile data and you move from standard coverage to regional coverage, or vice versa, you’ll need to refresh your data session. If you’re logged in to a secure website, your connection will time out and you’ll need to log back in.

Why doesn’t my device automatically connect to the regional network?

If your device doesn’t automatically connect to the regional network, check that your device is set up to automatically select a network.
