How to make an international (IDD) call

It's pretty simple to make a call from Australia to an overseas number - provided you've dialled the number correctly and haven't blocked international calling, it's just like calling locally.

What it costs

Check call rates on our website. Rates vary depending on the plan or prepaid recharge you're on and the countries you're calling.

How to call an overseas number from Australia

1. Exit code

This tells the network you're calling someone outside Australia. In Australia, use '0011', or you can use + from a mobile phone. (See examples below.)

2. Country code

This tells the network which country you're calling. If you need to check the country code, they're listed on the IDD call rate pages.

3. The number

If it has an area code, include it. If the number begins with a '0', drop it when you dial - you won't need it.

Some examples...

Let's say we need to call our friendly team in our Vodafone UK office. We know their local number (when calling inside the UK) is '07836 191 191'. So, to call them from Australia, using our mobile phone, we'll dial:

+ The exit code (or we could use '0011')
44 Country code for the UK.
7836 191 191 The number - see, we've dropped the '0' from the front.

So all together, we'd call '+ 44 7836 191 191'.

For next time, we'll save that number in our contacts, so we can make a quick call whenever.

How do I dial the plus ('+') on my phone?

  • On most mobile phones, you need to either press-and-hold the key labelled with + (usually the '0' or 'Asteresk' key on smartphones), or press it twice quickly (usually one 1-9 keypads)
  • On some smartphones, there's a button that'll brings up a secondary keyboard for all the symbols, like the +
